Granada Capilla de los Reyes Católicos

            
La reina Isabel I de Castilla pasó todo el verano de 1504 enferma, en Medina del Campo. El 13 de septiembre, ya viendo cerca su final, firmó la carta fundacional de una capilla donde sus restos y los de su esposo Fernando descansarían eternamente en Granada. Fruto de ese deseo, el arquitecto Enrique Egas construyó entre 1506 y 1517 la Capilla Real, donde hoy, siguiendo aquel último mandato real, se encuentra el sepulcro de los Reyes Católicos junto al de su hija Juana la Loca y el esposo de esta, Felipe I el Hermoso. Pero este edificio gótico tardío simboliza mucho más que la tumba de los monarcas: en él muere toda una época que veía nacer un tiempo nuevo, y su ubicación delata la importancia de esta ciudad para Isabel y Fernando. En Granada culminó en 1492 la unificación de los reinos de la Península Ibérica, iniciándose la integración del Estado moderno de España. Desde Granada se impulsó, mediante las Capitulaciones de Santa Fe firmadas con Cristóbal Colón, la expansión atlántica del Imperio hacia el Nuevo Mundo
