French Binoculars WW1, No D.13, 8x24

            An intriguing pair of binoculars bought today in an antiques/collectables shop for £15.00. They are marked on the top  left prism simply “No D.13”, the right side is blank. On the bottom left prism housing is the British government’s “crow’s foot”. On the right bottom prism housing is crudely scratched “D 12”. On the top bridge disc there is “Made in France” and “8x”. The objective lenses are 24mm. They are solidly made and optically excellent. The good quality leather case is unfortunately, in poor condition with the lid insert missing.

I believe they are binoculars bought at the start of WW1 to make up a shortfall. Many were bought from France and America, or donated by private individuals. Such purchased binoculars were marked with the crow’s foot and also coded S1 to S6, indicating type (prismatic, Galilean, unusual design) and condition, marks absent from these binoculars.
