Recresco Recycling, Springvale Industrial Estate, Cwmbran 7 February 2024

            If you were standing here when I was a child in the 1960s, where the Recresco facility now stands, was, up near the trees, the outline of the gardens and foundations of Springvale Cottages. In front of them were the derelict buildings of the old Coke Works; to the right up against what is now Greenforge Way, was the post war GKN foundry producing cylinder blocks for Perkins marine diesel engines. The whole area was once the infrastructure for Cwmbran Colliery, opened in 1837 and closed in 1927. Many of the old buildings and the washery tower were still present, albeit derelict and it was our adventure playground. All swept away after GKN closed down, and redeveloped into the Springvale Industrial Estate with part of the area given over to the Greenmeadow Community Farm.
