Maikapara house in Riga (Aristida Briana St., 3)

            The architect Robert August Pflug (1842-1885) built this house in the center of Riga in 1876 in the Neo-Renaissance style. In 1931, it was acquired by the tobacco manufacturer Zamuel (Samuel) Maykapar (Orthodox Karaite), and then the building was radically rebuilt by the Russian architect A. Trofimov.

In the middle of the XIX century on the site of the current street. Briana had numerous gardens and orchards owned by Karl Wagner. He ordered the chief architect of the city, a graduate of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts Pflug project of the mansion. Work on it began in 1867. Wagner and his family moved into the new house in 1876. This building was made in the then fashionable version of the “Florentine palazzo”, with numerous turrets, vases and sculptures on the facade. After the formation of the First Republic, the abandoned Wagner family house was transferred to the disposal of the British Embassy.

In 1931, Maykapar became interested in the building: it was next to the tobacco production of the Maikapars joint stock company, which determined the decision to buy it. The new owner had other architectural tastes, and he ordered a complete remodeling of the house in a neoclassical style using elements of the Baroque style. As a result, the flower-tower "excesses" of sculptural composition disappeared; old stoves were replaced by a modern heating system at that time. A glass structure with a balcony was attached to the entrance. The reconstruction of the building was carried out by a graduate of the Riga Polytechnic Institute, the architect of the bureau V. Shervinsky, Alexander Trofimov.

After the outbreak of World War II, the building was transferred to the disposal of the Rainis Museum of Literary Heritage. Later it was transferred to the Baltic military district, its commander, Marshal I.Kh. Bagramyan, lived here for several years. Since the beginning of the 50s, this house belonged to the Administrative Department of the Council of Ministers of the LSSR, was used as an official hotel and for representative purposes. Here N.S. Khrushchev, I. B. Tito, V. Ulbricht, J. Nehru, Fidel Castro, the Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh, and many other famous politicians stayed here.

Maikapara House is an architectural monument of national importance and one of the most valuable real estate and luxury representative houses in Riga.

The famous Maikapara house (3 Aristida Briana St.) was leased to the Japanese Embassy.
