Weather Station

            In this series we are visiting Low Head in northern Tasmania to examine the third oldest lighthouse in Australia and some of the rocks that form an impressive seascape.

In the previous photo I mentioned that black and white makes these rocks look like early NASA photos from the surface of Mars. Take away the lighthouse and the vegetation and imagine it. That there are no clouds in the sky only adds to the illusion.

One of the things that NASA studied with the Viking Landers was the weather. Here we see an official weather station of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. The tall anemometer which measures wind speed provides an interesting counterpoint to the lighthouse on the hill. 

Almost hidden in the pebbles and thorn bushes is the main part of the automated weather station (looking like an alien spacecraft). Enlarge the photo and have a look around. There's plenty to see.
