Edificio Telefónica - The Telefónica Building - Gran Vía - Madrid - Spain

The Telefónica Building is located on Madrid's Gran Vía. During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) the building was the Republican government's observation and communication center. The building was therefore a strategic target for Franco's forces directing cannon fire and air strikes at the building and at Gran Vía.
The Telefónica Building also housed the International Press Center. Here, among others, the American writers Ernest Hemingway and John Dos Passos were posted. They lived for a period at the Hotel Gran Vía. The hotel is still located on Gran Vía 25 - just across from The Telefónica Building.
