            Llanddwyn Island, covering an area of 0.3 sq km (0.12 sq mls) is situated near the southern entrance to the Menai Strait which separates Yns Mon from the North West Wales  Coastline. It played a key role in ensuring the safe passage of shipping from the nearby ports of Bangor, Caernarfon and Felinhelli as slate production increased to satisfy an ever increasing worldwide demand in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. 

These images were taken at Midday three quarters of an hour later from the previous viewpoint after walking along the coastal path. In the top image (far right) you can see the large cross which stands adjacent to Twr Mawr Lighthouse and the Lighthouse Keeper's and Pilot's Cottages - as per my earlier postings.    

The lower collage image shows the beacon called Tŵr Bach (English- Small Tower) the island's original lighthouse, in greater detail, built in the earlier 1800's at the tip of the island to provide guidance to ships heading for the Strait. 

Its walls are over 2 metres thick and only 5 metres high. It's still a working lighthouse having no windows and is powered by Solar Power with a range of 7 nautical miles.  

A causeway was also built to provide easier access across the rocks to the headland.  

There are many small coves and inlets you can see from the cliffs. Many of these are inaccessible as they are nesting grounds for sea birds but still nice to admire. Pictured is Pilot's Cove - the most accessible cove with the largest beach. 

To the immediate left across the Menai Strait, there are fine views of the Snowdonia Mountains. Although hazy, by enlarging the lower image, you can also see the distant Llyn Peninsula across the Irish Sea.  

When planning a visit to North West Wales this stunningly beautiful and historic island, adjacent to Newborough Beach, is well worth a visit. I very much hope these postings have further encouraged you. However, please check the tide times beforehand so as not to become marooned!
