***Just Around the Corner - a photo on Flickriver

            It was early morning and my camera was still sleepy when I walked through Plaza de San Marco, turned the corner and climbed over the bridge.  

Framed by the morning light and the fleeing shadows, the statue rose like a ship out of darkness along the Riva Degli Shiavone.  

There were so many faces looking out from the soldier to the horse and the lions, shields and a couple of goddesses thrown in to keep everything balanced.  To a novice, it was too much ... for me, it was bliss :)

But of course I had to find the perfect angle and so I roamed around, up and down while the city began awakening.

Should I focus on the battle cry of Vitorrio Emmanual II, the first King of united Italy raising his sword in victory or the grand stallion rising out from the marble slab ...

Or should I listen to the growling lion, symbolizing San Marco, with his paws on 2 arcane books of knowledge, roaring at the fleeing darkness?  Perhaps the Goddess controlling the beast was most worthy ... or the shambling person shuffling away into the distance of the new world...

So with the greatest care and skill I could muster, I crouched low, closed my eyes, pointed to the sky and clicked ... 

For a while, I sat silently and listened to the waves lapping against the pier and the birds chasing their dreams.  When I opened my eyes, the crowd was starting to filter in, the molten sun had spilled over the buildings and the day had officially begun.

I hoped that one day, I might open this image, taste the salty wind on my face again, feel the molten sun rising over the top of buildings and unleash the glorious colours that had been suspended for so many years...

Perhaps on a morning just like today ... :)
