En 1842, à Paris, un portrait daguerréotype coûte de
15 à 30 francs. Dans l'industrie en général, pour une
journée de travail de treize à quinze heures, les hommes
gagnent 2,50 francs et les femmes 1,50 franc. En 1854, un
portrait daguerréotype ne coûte plus que de 2 à 15 francs
selon le format demandé, soit jusqu'à sept fois moins

Pas moins de dix mille cinq cent soixante-sept studios (10567)
de photographes professionnels ouvrent leurs portes en
France durant les quatre-vingts premières années d'existence de la photographie (1840-1920). Les photographes
s'installant principalement à Paris, puis Lyon, Metz et
Marseille, les ouvertures de studios couvrent ensuite
rapidement tout le territoire français. Ce sont les grands
centres urbains qui accueillent l'afflux de la population et
ce sont eux également qui représentent les moteurs de
l'économie et de la transformation sociale.
C'est à Paris que le plus grand nombre de créations
d'ateliers voit le jour avec, au total, trois mille trois cent
soixante-trois ouvertures entre 1840 et 1920. Le pic des
créations de studios photographiques se situent au début
des années 1860. Deux autres pics sont également bien
marques, l'un en 1880 et l'autre en 1890, certainement
liés aux retombées des expositions universelles de 1878 et
de 1889. Avant 1850, trois cent vingt photographes
professionnels étaient déjà présents à Paris alors que, sur la
même période, cinq cent trente-six photographes
s'étaient installés dans le reste de l'Hexagone 2-Cinq ans
plus tard, en 1855, on dénombre cinq cent soixante-six
studios photographiques dans Paris.
