CANAL GRANDE - TRIESTE (EXPLORE April 14, 2023)

            In the area now occupied by the Borgo Teresiano (from Corso Italia to Piazza della Libertà) there were once the salt pans. The area has been completely reclaimed, but the canals perpendicular to the quay were the subject of extensive studies. In fact, it was thought to excavate them more to expand the navigable surface of the city and facilitate the loading/unloading of goods directly from the warehouses erected on the banks, but the project was then abandoned and the Grand Canal remained the only canal in the city.
In 1934 the final part of the canal was filled in with the resulting materials from the demolitions carried out in the ghetto and old city areas.
The Canal was one of the nerve centers of the Trieste dell'Emporio. Along its banks still overlook the palaces of the merchants who made the city great, squares, churches and historic cafes: Palazzo Gopcevich - now home to the Schmidl Theater Museum and the Photo Library of the Civic Museums, Palazzo Carciotti, Piazza Ponterosso, Piazza Sant'Antonio, built on the underground part in 1934, the Serbian Orthodox church of San Spiridione and the church of Sant'Antonio Taumaturgo, and the historic Caffé Stella Polare.
The Canal was originally crossed by 3 bridges, once revolving to allow the entry of ships (white bridge, red bridge and green bridge), of these today only the Red Bridge remains. A footbridge has also recently been built - Joyce Passage or Curto Bridge - so called by the city due to an alleged error in measuring the width.
The statue of James Joyce was placed on the Ponte Rosso in 2004 (made by the Triestine sculptor Nino Spagnoli on the occasion of the centenary of Joyce's arrival in Trieste), and it is in fact precisely in Piazza Ponterosso that the building that houses the Berlitz School, founded by the Irish writer.

Nella zona occupata oggi dal Borgo Teresiano (da corso Italia a piazza della Libertà) un tempo c'erano le saline. L'area è stata interamente bonificata, ma i canali perpendicolari alla banchina furono oggetto di ampi studi. Si pensava infatti di escavarli maggiormente per ampliare la superficie navigabile della città e facilitare il carico/scarico delle merci direttamente dai magazzini fatti erigere sulle sponde, ma il progetto venne poi abbandonato e il Canal Grande rimase l'unico canale della città.
Nel 1934 la parte finale del canale venne interrata con i materiali di risulta delle demolizioni attuate nelle zone del ghetto e  di ciittà vecchia. 
Il Canale è stato uno dei centri nevralgici della Trieste dell'Emporio. Lungo le sue sponde si affacciano tutt'ora i palazzi dei mercanti che hanno fatto grande la città, piazze, chiese e caffè storici: palazzo Gopcevich - oggi sede del Museo Teatrale Schmidl e della Fototeca dei Civici Musei, palazzo Carciotti, piazza Ponterosso, piazza Sant'Antonio, sorta sulla parte interrata nel 1934, la chiesa Serbo Ortodossa di San Spiridione e la chiesa di Sant'Antonio Taumaturgo, e lo storico Caffé Stella Polare.
Il Canale era originariamente attraversato da 3 ponti, un tempo girevoli per permettere l'entrata dei bastimenti (ponte bianco, ponte rosso e ponte verde), di questi oggi rimane solo il Ponte Rosso. Recentemente è stata realizzata anche una passerella pedonale - Passaggio Joyce o Ponte Curto - così chiamato dalla città per un presunto errore di misurazione della larghezza. 
Sul Ponte Rosso è stata posizionata nel 2004 la statua di James Joyce (realizzata dallo scultore triestino Nino Spagnoli in occasione del centenario dell'arrivo di Joyce a Trieste), ed è infatti proprio in piazza Ponterosso che si affaccia il palazzo sede della Berlitz School fondata dallo scrittore irlandese.
