Teggs Nose, Bottoms Reservoir and a Mackeral Sky

            Tegg's Nose is the name of the hill in the background.  In my last photo I mentioned a nearby hill which looked a little like the Matterhorn but this hill bears some resemblance to a volcano.    It has that pointed shape and what looks like lava flows on its flanks. Alas, it has no such claim to fame. It is, or rather was, simply a quarry with the waste being tipped down the side. It is taking a while but nature is gradually reclaiming that waste.  It was noted as Teggesnase in the 1357 Palatinate of Chester. Forest Proceedings (it was obviously part of that Royal Hunting ground mentioned in previous posts of mine).  Its last place in history is said to be by providing stone for the large WWII Burtonwood Airfield in Lancashire, once the largest air transport hub in the country with aircraft travelling between the UK and the Americas (little signs of it these days!).  I am not sure when it ceased to be a quarry but I do recall being able, officially, to walk through it in the 1950's along a public footpath (my grandfather and I had to shelter once when blasting took place - H&S ???).  Whilst I was at the local grammar school at that time one of our lessons took place in a classroom with views of those tops and they were opening up a gulley on the skyline as a cut-through.  I was more interested in its progress than the lessons !!

The water is one of Macclesfield's Reservoirs in the upper valley of the River Bollin.  Its peculiar name comes from the fact that, as the 1850 Tithe Maps shows, the meadow it was built on was called, simply, "Bottoms". After all, it was the lowest field of the owning farm so the name made sense.  It is not drinking water but is a compensation reservoir. The water is from the River Bollin which flowed through the field. The river later downstream flowed through the growing industrial town of Macclesfield. Its course was between and even under various textile mills, dye works, gas works, even a railway station. It was a dump for the industrial effluence and, quite honestly, it stank even in my childhood!!!  Water just had to flow even in dry summers so the reservoir was built in 1850 along with a higher, drinking, reservoir called Ridgegate.  This Bottoms Res is still used as compensation water even today.

The cloud shape is called, amongst more official terms, a 'mackerel' sky and suggests rain may arrive within 24 hrs. (This was taken on Monday and it rained overnight Tuesday).
