Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, Bristol, Maine

            One of Maine's favorite and most visited tourist lighthouse attractions and it is also pictured on the Maine state 25 cent piece. The lighthouse is built on a shelf of sedimentary rock that is beautiful to photograph but dangerous to walk on.

A lighthouse was first built on this point in 1827, but of poor construction, and was replaced by the present 38 foot tall rubblestone tower in 1835. The original keeper's house (1827) was replaced with a new wooden structure in 1857. The original and still working fourth order Fresnel lens was installed in 1856. Automated in 1934. The light signal is a white flash every 6 seconds.

The property around the lighthouse was transferred to the Town of Bristol in 1940 and is now Pemaquid Point Park. The keeper's house is now a Fisherman's Museum and gift shop. A group of non-profit associations maintain the lighthouse and outbuildings in excellent condition.
