Gehakkelde aurelia (NL)
De gehakkelde aurelia (Polygonia c-album) is een vlinder uit de onderfamilie Nymphalinae van de familie Nymphalidae (aurelia's of schoenlappers). Deze middelgrote vlinder komt voor in een groot deel van het Palearctisch gebied en zijn verspreidingsgebied breidt zich steeds verder uit naar het noorden. De gehakkelde aurelia een soort, die bij bosranden, struwelen en in parken en tuinen kan worden waargenomen. Met de dagpauwoog, atalanta, kleine vos en landkaartje is de gehakkelde aurelia een van de "brandnetelsoorten" onder de dagvlinders, waarvan de rupsen vooral op brandnetel te vinden zijn. Het menu van de rups van de gehakkelde aurelia kan echter ook uit andere planten bestaan. De vlinder overwintert als volwassen dier verstopt in boomholtes of tussen afgevallen blad.

De gehakkelde aurelia dankt de Nederlandstalige naam aan de grof gekartelde (gehakkelde) vleugelrand. Ook de Franse naam Robert-le-Diable (Robert de duivel) verwijst naar de grillige vleugelranden.

De wetenschappelijke naam - c-album - verwijst naar de witte c (album = wit) die zichtbaar is op de vleugels van de vlinder wanneer deze gesloten zijn. Ook in het Duits (C-falter) en vele andere talen wordt naar deze C verwezen. Ditzelfde geldt voor oude Nederlandse namen C-vlinder en witte C-vlinder. Ook de Engelse naam Comma verwijst naar deze witte C, maar benoemt de witte vorm als komma.

Polygonia c-album, the comma, is a species of butterfly belonging to the family Nymphalidae. Its irregular wing edges are characteristic of the Polygonia genus, which is why they are commonly called anglewings. It is found in northern Africa and across Europe from Portugal through Asia as far as Japan. Its dorsal wings are colourful but its underside has a pattern that camouflages it when its wings are held together.

These butterflies hibernate, so they could be seen year round, but the active flying period extends from April to November, depending on location. Adults feed on nectar, mainly of thistles (Cirsium and Carduus species), but also on bramble (Rubus fruticosus), ivy (Hedera helix), knapweeds (Centaurea species), and privet (Ligustrum vulgare). This species prefers open woodland, wood edges, country lanes and gardens.

Polygonia c-album has a wingspan of about 45 millimetres. The underside of the wings of this butterfly are dull brown with a small white "C" shaped marking resembling a comma (hence the common name). The wings have a distinctive ragged edge, apparently a cryptic form as the butterfly resembles a fallen leaf.

The sound of C (listen by clicking here) is the best know international hit of Confetti’s, a Belgian new beat band from the 1980s.
