Auntie Bernice, Mrs. Boyce, Mom (L-R), Cookout, circa 1960

            Back when people DRESSED for a cookout. These ladies, dressed in the height of late 1950's-early 1960's fashion, are standing where our garage is now. The houses across the street were demolished in the late '70's -- the land they stood on is now parking lot "A" for Fellowship Baptist Church.

The bronze-colored '55 Buick 4-door hardtop in the left background figured prominently in a notorious 1964 murder-suicide. Our next-door neighbor, a CTA bus driver, was having an affair with another neighbor, and when she threatened to reveal the affair to his wife, he killed her, and then shot himself to death in that car. One of his daughters found him when she came home from school. He left a suicide note saying that since no one would believe that it was an accident, he was taking the easy way out. Sad. And just about the last time our neighborhood made the headlines.

The Buick sedan across the street was light green with a dark green top. Funny how you remember things like that, 55 years later.
