Luthera M. Carleton (obverse) - a photo on Flickriver

This photograph was purchased April 10, 2011, at the WOKO flea market in Essex Junction, Vermont. It was one of 64 photographs in an oversized shoebox that I purchased for $20. The dealer claimed that the photographs were from an estate in Middlebury, Vermont. I believe the photo subject is Luthera M. Carleton of Newbury, Orange County, Vermont. I found her in the 1900 Newbury, Orange County, Vermont census, at age 19, a teacher, in the household of her father, Dudley Carleton, listed as a farmer. With her was her mother, Martha A., her grandfather, William C., her aunt, Hattie E., her uncle, Dudley B., and a servant, James G. McKay. Some time around 1906, she married Fred Wilcox from New Hampshire. In 1908, her father, Dudley, died of "valvular disease of the heart." I found her again in 1910 in Lyndonville, Vermont. Fred was working as a railroad engineer. They had been married four years and had lost a child. When I found them again in 1920, they had four children, Luther F., age 9, Luthera A., age 9, Pauline E., age 6, and Harland J., age 2. Fred's father, David, age 72 was living with them. I have learned that Luthera's daughter, Pauline has recently passed on leaving a daughter, four grandsons, eight great grandchildren, and six great. great grandchildren.
