Powel Crosley Jr. (1886 – 1961) of Cincinnati, Ohio built subcompact cars. His Crosley car firm was active from 1939 to 1952, interrupted by World War II.

 In 1939, Crosley broke with tradition and sold his cars through independent appliance, hardware, and department stores instead 
of automobile dealerships.
