SÜDTIROL, Dolomiten , Rosengarten im Abendlicht - 378/844 v

            Der unalpin klingende Name Rosengarten für den zweithöchsten Berg und die ganze Gruppe ist seit dem späten 15. Jahrhundert bekannt (1497 Rosengarten, 1506 Kofl am Rosengarten[1]); er ist weder von einem Garten voller Rosen abgeleitet, wie dies in der Laurinsage berichtet wird, noch von den feuerrot glühenden Felsen am Abend bei Sonnenuntergang, auch wenn diese ätiologischen Motive die Namengebung nachträglich überformt haben dürften. Sprachforscher vermuten, dass der Name Rosengarten mit dem alten Wortstamm „ruza“ zusammenhängt, was so viel wie Geröllhalde heißt.
