Wasco Business Strip - a photo on Flickriver

Happy Monochrome Monday, everyone! =)

Population 410 as of the 2010 census, here's a shot of the tiny business strip of Wasco, Oregon.

In my experience with urban photography I've found that city landscapes change quickly over time. Just in the last 12 years there are several corners of Portland that have either changed, been replaced, or disappeared altogether. Since moving to Portland in 1979 the skyline and all it's suburbs look completely different now than when I arrived.

No doubt the same can be expected of small towns. Most of the people who live in a larger metropolis like Portland have never seen or heard of a town like Wasco. I know this because of the responses I get from family and friends, or my coworkers. I'm constantly uploading images of these invisible places onto the computer wallpapers at work just to observe the reactions. It's always the same, too:

Them: "Where is that?"
Me: "Wasco."
Them: "Is that in Oregon?"
Me: "Yes. It's in Sherman County."
Them: "Where's Sherman County?"

A lot of these small rural towns with their aged infrastructure are slowly being abandoned. I'm sure the recent pandemic isn't helping the situation, either. These modest municipalities are charming and a pleasure to visit and photograph. Unfortunately, most of them will be gone someday. That's why I feel it's important to photograph them now before they vanish.
