Frost Flower

            Oh boy!  Here is a weather phenomenon I don't get to see often.  In fact, in the past I've only  seen these in late fall, during freezeup.  

It takes very special and specific conditions for these to form.  

Under certain conditions, humidity still being released from not-quite-frozen earth will cling to surfaces when the air cools quickly to below freezing during a rapid drop in temperature.  Sometimes this accretion will form lovely, fragile dendritic crystal 'ferns' of  hoarfrost.

Conditions last night must have been perfect.  Temperature dropped down to -9 F (-23C) by morning,  a new low temp record for this day.
