Most of the statues produced by the Kongo people of southwestern Congo are "fetishes" or "nail statues". However, there are also "ancestor statues" of great importance to the Kongo, who believe the idealized ancestor always remains among his descendants to protect them. This wooden image idealizes feminine beauty and represents a royal ancestor. These naturalistic figures were set up in shrines.

The carving of this piece is first class. The figure is wonderfully graceful and detailed.
