Flaming Gorge Sunset - a photo on Flickriver

One of the most spectacular sunsets I have ever witnessed occurred during a visit to northern Utah's Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. Shot on Fuji Velvia / scanned on Minolta DiMage 5400. No hdr or pumping up the colors other than how Velvia renders such scenes. As my wife and I were driving away from Flaming Gorge in search of lodging we knew the sky had potential for something special and I searched for a spot to pull off the road; we found some wide open farmland with surrounding hills, even though I had been hoping for some trees or other foreground items to frame my shots. As we stood there the clouds slowly morphed from pastel pinks, yellows and oranges to deep, saturated colors like nothing I'd never seen before. The cloud formations couldn't have been better formed to capture the amazing light. It all just came together rather quickly and there wasn't even time to grab the grad nd filters or to set up the tripod. I would have liked to capture a bit more definition in the hills but I knew scenes like this don't last long and I just wanted to grab a few shots beore the colors started to fade.This photo was taken in 2005 and I haven't seen a sunset since that has even come close!
