Stormy Outlook

            One glance at this scene leaves little doubt as to why they named this area the Painted Desert. Located in northern Arizona within the Petrified Forest National Park, the Painted Desert contains some of the most beautifully colored and sculpted landscape to be found. On the day of our recent visit in mid winter a powerful snowstorm was approaching from the north, making the landscape before us all that more dramatic. However, once the snowflakes began to pelt our windshield, we knew it was time to hightail it out of the area and try to outrun the storm. Several hours later, we found ourselves basking in sunshine and mild temperatures as we drove over the Glen Canyon Dam at Lake Powell and listened to radio reports of heavy snowfall in the area we had so recently fled.
