ANTON BRUCKNER's 127th anniversary 📯(Pilgrimage to Great Master - VIII, THE END)

            ON THIS VERY DAY 127 years ago Bruckner took a stroll in his residential garden in Vienna. It was October 11th, 1896. Back from the garden, he set the last notes of his unfinished 9th symphony on paper and sipped on a cup of tea. He sat in his bed and passed away in peace. Like a true, blessed Christian: without suffering, pain or shame. He was just 72: a young man by today's standards. 

Those last sketch sheets got lost and we will never know what possibly the greatest of all symphonic grand Finale was to sound - he had the sketches ready and the music score has been rounded up in his head. He even played it on the piano to a couple of visiting friends. 

There were many attempts to reconstruct this Finale on the basis of leftover fragments. Since the 1970s there is a whole school of authors in existence, scholars who went to their outermost best to give us at least a foretaste of the lost notations. However. The greatest of all existing Finale, those of the 8th and 5th, could have been surpassed and topped only by one man - the Meister himself. He has never heard his 5th performed, which is an extraordinary symphonic contrapuntal masterpiece, one of the greatest in history of music. So I hope that he has already been granted to hear it in a way more perfect and awe-inspiring than we mortals can afford. Also I hope that by the inexplicable ways of the Kingdom to come, Bruckner's Finale of the 9th stands there firmly in place, with finished instrumentation and polished details. Available not only to the composer to hear it, but also to all of us who admire his unique achievements and wouldn't like to live in any dimension or state of Universe without being able to hear it. Repeatedly then.

We fare through an age of materialism / consumerism. We are addicted to ludicrous things that undermine our human dignity. Still, there is hope: not only in the true words of our Lord, who infallibly keeps all His promises, but in our sleepy human nature too - our gifts waiting to become awake. I've heard so many musically uneducated people telling me how Bruckner's Te Deum or a concert performance of a Symphony made them feel goosebumps. So lets leave it open: there you have the image of Bruckner's birth house back side, and a sign inviting you to 'Symphony walkway'. You may hike the marked trail to Bruckner's resting place in Sankt Florian monastery, but – better still – attend a concert performance of one of his symphonies, masses or Te Deum. At least once in your lifetime!
