Andean bear

            The spectacled bear, Andean bear or Andean short-faced bear (Tremarctos ornatus) is South America's only bear species. 
It can be found throughout mountainous regions of the Andes in eastern Panama, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia, and in northwestern Argentina. These mid-sized bears can live in the Andean deserts and up through the misty cloud forests to the mountain-top paramo grasslands. They prefer living in densely forested areas, as they are very timid and want to avoid humans.
Males are a third larger than females in dimensions and sometimes twice their weight. Males can weigh from 100 to 200 kg, and females 35 to 82 kg. Head-and-body length can range from 120 to 200 cm, though mature males do not measure less than 150 cm. 
It is called the spectacled bear because it has circles of cream-colored fur around its eyes, which make it look like it's wearing glasses. This cream-colored fur can also extend down its throat and chest. Each bear has its own unique pattern of markings. The rest of its fur is black or dark brown. Compared to other living bears, this species has a more rounded face with a relatively short and broad snout. They have specialized claws for climbing trees. In the wild, they live for about 25 years.

De brilbeer (Tremarctos ornatus) is de enige berensoort die zijn oorsprong in Zuid-Amerika heeft.
De brilbeer leeft in Zuid-Amerika in het Andes gebergte van oostelijk Panama en Ecador in het noorden tot noordelijk Argentinië in het zuiden, vaak in onherbergzame streken. Dit is waarschijnlijk ook één van de redenen dat hij nog niet is uitgestorven. Hij leeft voornamelijk in de bergwouden op ongeveer 2000 meter hoogte, maar wordt ook aangetroffen op steppes en zelfs in woestijnachtig gebied. Hij heeft een blonde tekening rond zijn ogen, vandaar ook de naam brilbeer. Iedere beer heeft een eigen unieke tekening rondom zijn ogen. De brilbeer heeft een zwart tot donkerbruine, kortharige vacht en sterke klauwen. De brilbeer is met een lengte van 120 à 200 cm een relatief kleine beer.
Net als andere berensoorten leeft de brilbeer solitair. Ze ontlopen elkaar, maar zijn niet territoriaal. De brilbeer is een goede klimmer en maakt van alle beren het meeste gebruik van bomen: om voedsel te zoeken, te vluchten, maar ook om te slapen.
