Harris Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus) - a photo on Flickriver

            The Harris’s Hawk, Harris Hawk, Dusky Hawk or Bay-winged Hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus), is a medium-sized bird of prey which occurs from the southwestern United States south through Central America to Peru, Chile and central Argentina.
The bird prefers semi-open habitats with low vegetation. It breeds in trees or on cliffs. 
Individual birds range in length from 46 to 76 cm and generally have a wingspan of about 1.1 m. Females weigh an average of 950 to 1100 gr, and males are smaller, weighing an average of 800 gr. They have dark brown plumage with chestnut shoulders, wing linings, and thighs, and white on the base of the tip of the tail. 
The diet of Harris's Hawks is versatile and varies with prey availability. These hawks feed mostly on small mammals such as rats and mice, but also take small birds (often in flight) and lizards. 
Harris's hawks are extremely social birds and typically live in social groups. Because it often hunts in groups of 4 to 7 birds, the Harris's Hawk can also take down larger prey. 
This living and hunting style, unusual for raptors, has earned them the nickname "Wolves of the Sky".
The picture of the Harris Hawk had been taken during a raptor show in the butterfly house Vlindervallei (Butterfly Valley), part of the Orchideeënhoeve (Orchid Farm) in Luttelgeest, the Netherlands.

De woestijnbuizerd of Harris' buizerd (Parabuteo unicinctus) is een middelgrote roofvogel in het zuidwesten van de Verenigde Staten, Midden-Amerika en in Zuid-Amerika naar het zuiden toe tot in Peru, Chili en centraal Argentinië. Woestijnbuizerds leven in semi-droge halfwoestijnen, gebieden met een paar bomen. In Zuid-Amerika komen ze ook voor in moerassen en mangroves. 
Nesten worden door de vrouwtjes in bomen, op cactussen en op rotsen gebouwd. 
De Nederlandse naam woestijnbuizerd is verwarrend, omdat gesuggereerd wordt dat het een buizerd is. De lichaamsbouw en de jachttechniek komen echter meer overeen met de haviken. De Engelse naam ‘Harris Hawk’ is beter gekozen.
De vogels hebben een lengte van 46 à 76 cm en een vleugelspanwijdte van 1 à 1,15 meter. Vrouwtjes wegen 950 à 1100 gr, en de kleinere mannetjes zijn gemiddeld 800 gr. Ze hebben een donkerbruin-grijzig verenkleed met kastanjebruine vleugels en dijen. Het puntje van de staart is wit.
Als echte roofvogels leven deze vogels van prooidieren. Met snelle stootduiken vanaf een lage uitkijkpost vangen ze reptielen, ratten, muizen en knaagdieren. Kleine en middelgrote vogels worden in de lucht gevangen en gedood door de vlijmscherpe nagels. Kleine dieren verdwijnen met huid en haar in de forse snavels, grotere worden geplukt en in stukjes gegeten.
Woestijnbuizerds zijn sociale vogels die in groepen leven. Vaak jagen ze ook in groepen van 4 tot 7 vogels en zijn dan in staat om grotere prooien te vangen. Deze ongewone jachtstijl voor roofvogels heeft hen de bijnaam "Wolves of the sky" (Wolven van de hemel) gegeven.
Deze woestijbuizerd is gefotografeerd tijdens een roofvogelshow in de vlindertuin, de Vlindervallei, een deel van de Orchideeënhoeve in Luttelgeest (Flevoland, Noordoostpolder).
