Male young Siberian wapiti - a photo on Flickriver

            The Siberian wapiti, Altai wapiti or Altai maral (Cervus canadensis sibiricus), sometimes too called the Altai elk by North Americans, is one of eight subspecies of the elk or wapiti (Cervus canadensis).
The Siberian wapiti is found in the forest hills of southern Siberia, northwestern Mongolia, and northern Xinjiang province of China.
The Siberian wapiti is also closely related to the slightly smaller European red deer (Cervus elaphus).
Elk cows average 225 to 245 kg, stand 1.3 m at the wither, and are 2.1 m from nose to tail. Bulls are some 40% larger than cows, weighing an average of 320 to 335 kg, standing 1.5 m at the wither and averaging 2.45 m in length.
Only the males have antlers, which start growing in the spring and are shed each winter.

De altai wapiti  (Cervus canadensis sibiricus), ook maral en Siberische elk genoemd is een Aziatisch hert, een van de acht ondersoorten van de Noord-amerikaanse Cervus canadensis (de wapiti, ook elk genoemd). 
De soort wordt aangetroffen in de bossen en heuvels van zuid Siberië, noordwest Mongolië en het noorden van de provincie Xinjiang in China. De altai wapiti is ook verwant aan het Europese edelhert (Cervus elaphus), die circa 10 à 15 % kleiner is.
De vrouwtjes wegen gemiddeld 225 à 245 kg, hebben een schofthoogte van 1,3 m en zijn 2,1 m van neus tot staart. De stieren zijn tot 40% groter met een gemiddeld gewicht van 320 à 335 kg, een schofthoogte van 1,5 meter en gemiddeld 2,45 meter lang.
Alleen de mannetjes hebben een gewei, dat in het voorjaar begint te groeien en elke winter wordt afgeworpen.
