The order of precedence among pigs and piglets is determined by mock battles (rough-and-tumble play).
The (common) warthog or "African Lens-Pig" (Phacochoerus africanus) is a wild member of the pig family that lives in Africa. The common name comes from the four large wart-like tusks found on the head of the warthog, which serve the purpose of defense when males fight.
Warthogs range in size from 90 to 152 cm in length and 50 to 150 kg in weight. A warthog is identifiable by the two pairs of tusks protruding from the mouth, which are used as weapons against predators. The upper canine teeth can grow to 23 cm, and are of a squashed circle shape in cross section, almost rectangular, being about 4.5 cm deep and 2.5 cm wide. Warthogs are fast runners and quite capable jumpers.
Although warthogs are commonly seen in (and associated with) open grasslands, they will seek shelter and forage in denser vegetation. In fact, warthogs prefer to forage in dense, moist areas when available. The common warthog diet is omnivorous, composed of grasses, roots, berries and other fruits, bark, fungi, eggs, dead animals, and even small mammals, reptiles and birds.

Het Afrikaanse wrattenzwijn of knobbelzwijn (Phacochoerus africanus) is een algemeen zwijn uit de familie der varkens. Het leeft op de savannen van Afrika ten zuiden van de Sahara en heeft een voorkeur voor de savanne en licht bebost landschap. Het wrattenzwijn eet vooral gras, maar ook bast, bladeren, wortelen, vruchten, aas, insecten en larven, en zelfs uitwerpselen. Ook eet het aarde, voor de mineralen. In het droge seizoen vooral knollen en wortelstokken.
Het zwijn heeft een lang plat gezicht en staat hoog op de poten. Het zwijn is te herkennen aan de twee paren slagtanden die aan de zijkanten van de bek uitsteken.
Het wratten- of knobbelzwijn wordt 90 à 152 cm lang en 50 à 150 kg zwaar. De schouderhoogte is 55 à 85 cm en de staart is 35 à 50 cm lang. Vrouwtjes zijn lichter dan mannetjes, ongeveer 45 à 75 kg.
