Ambling through "The Grove"

Dakota and Iowa Railroad 3025 and 2513 (along with 3031 out of frame on the rear) wind through the S curve along the Big Sioux River just north of Akron, Iowa. The Sioux City crew is just a few minutes into the southbound leg of their journey, having just tied down the train they brought north at Chatsworth and picked up this southbound train of mostly rock and ethanol loads for the return to Sioux City. I heard the DAIR crew on the radio reference this patch of woods as "the grove," site of a 10 mph slow order that made shooting this birds-eye view like shooting the proverbial "fish in the barrel." A drone seems the best way to get the true overview of this S in the woods.

This former Milwaukee Road line was built along the Big Sioux River valley for most of it's length south of Sioux Falls, and is often only a short distance away from the river. The river also serves as the South Dakota/Iowa Border for a large stretch of the SE part of south Dakota (it is the "Dakota and Iowa Railroad" afterall...), and so the train is in Iowa but the land at the far left is South Dakota.

The D&I is certainly a classy outfit, with their clean power and cars, regular operating pattern with what seemed like (to an outside observer) efficient crews, and it all happens in the middle of some great scenery. This was one of the last photos of my trip, but it might be my favorite of the adventure, railroad-wise at least.
