Edinburgh City Transport Leyland Titan PD3A/2 849 : George Street c1970

            One of Roger Hall's images that appear here with his permission and it is of a vehicle type I knew well after we moved back to Edinburgh in the early 1970s. 849, EWS 849D, was one of the batch of Leyland Titan's with forward entrance Alexander bodywork that was delivered in 1966 alongside a batch of Leyland Atlanteans as the Department 'hedged' their bets as to future vehicle purchasing and operational strategy. The Atlantean - and bus grant - would win out thus enabling more widespread OPO operation in common with the vast majority of operators. Leyland had done well out of Edinburgh as, for many years, the Corporation had been very faithful to the PD2 and PD3 range of chassis.

849 is seen here, with Corporation lettering so it is before the formation of Lothian in 1975, on George St heading west on the outer side of the 19 Circle. Edinburgh liked 'Circle' and had several such routes and in time the idea to differentiate them say the inner and outer gain separate route numbers so the 19 became the 19/39. All this did in a way was double the number of routes appearing as 'Circle'! I notice that rather than the correct intermediate the bus is dressed showing the ubiquitous "Hire a bus" blind. This sometimes happened if a bus was from a different garage - can't recall where 849 was allocated to at this time but I think it was Central and so on the 19 so it could equally have been crew laziness!

In the background St Andrew Square can be seen along with the looming bulk of the St James Centre. At this time George St still had street lighting using the old centre tram traction pole with the double vertical fluorescent lanterns - these look more like the GEC version than the Revo 'Festivals'.
