The Port of Manchester : Queen Elizabeth II Docks : opening handbook 19 January 1954 : plan

            The Manchester Ship Canal, opened to connect the inland cities of Manchester and Salford to the open sea via the Mersey Estuary, was opened in 1894 and the Ship Canal Company, municipally owned, was the port authority for the Port of Manchester. The authority continued to develop facilities along the length of the Canal and in 1922 a small dock was constructed to serve the new petroleum products site at Stanlow in Cheshire. This was added to in 1933 and in post-WW2 times as Shell developed Stanlow into one of their major refining sites work started in 1949 on a new dock capable of handling larger vessels with separate locks adjacent to the entrance to the Ship Canal.

This dock was named, in the spirit of the times, the Queen Elizabeth II Dock and opened on 19 January 1954. The book describes the construction and operation of the Docks as well as its direct connections via pipelines to the nearby Stanlow Refinery.
