            Landsat image of the Altyn Tagh Fault (extending from about 8 o'clock to 3:30 o'clock), Gansu Province, China. Included in this image is a huge alluvial fan that is fed by a river which is left-laterally offset by slippage along the fault. Extending from just east of the offset river is a series of thrust and reverse faults. The area of this image also includes the northeastern tip of the Tibetan Plateau; to the north of the Altyn Tagh Fault and plateau is the Takla Makan Desert. The Altyn Tagh Fault is about 1 1/2 times longer than the San Andreas Fault. This is a false-color satellite image.
