Jan Fabre – Op zoek naar Utopia – 2003

            Jan Fabre ( °1958 Antwerp ) is a multidisciplinary artist: performer, draftsman, sculptor, theater director, etc .. He calls himself a consilience- artist, someone who is always looking for relationships between different disciplines. Thanks to these interconnections, he gives new interpretations to the world of art, theater and literature. As drafftsman he is known for his "Bic-art “: drawings simply with the ballpoint pen, concerning all possible themes. At a young age he became fascinated by the world of insects. From there grew the interaction animal-man and man-animal into an important part of metamorphosis and therefore as a constant in Fabres ideas. From the nineties on, he uses frequently shields of beetles in his installations. Research into the meaning of the body is essential in the work of Jan Fabre: the body is the entrance to every emotion, thought and higher contemplation. As an sculptor, Jan Fabre makes great monumental works, as a theater artist, he is the author of a great oeuvre of theater texts. Passion, desire, beauty and mortality are recurrent themes, both on stage and in his sculptures.
The work “In search of Utopia”, is made of bronze, is three metres high, five metres wide and seven metres long and weighs more than 5 tons. The sculpture is overlayd with gold leaf. It is actually a self-portrait. It is Fabre himself, who is depicted sitting on a turtle, as if he were riding a horse. Jan Fabre indicates the work of art as the search for Utopia: after all everyone is on the lookout for this ideal place. It is a celebration of the imagination.

Jan Fabre (° 1958 Antwerpen ) is een multidisciplinair kunstenaar: performer, tekenaar, beeldend kunstenaar, theatermaker enz..  Hij noemt zichzelf een consilience-kunstenaar, iemand die steeds zoekt naar verwantschap tussen verschillende disciplines. Dankzij die verbintenis geeft hij nieuwe interpretaties aan de wereld van beeldende kunst, theater en literatuur. Als tekenaar staat hij bekend om zijn "Bic-art", tekeningen gewoon met de balpen, rondom alle mogelijke thema's. Jan Fabre raakte op jonge leeftijd gefascineerd door de leefwereld van insecten. Van daaruit groeide de interactie dier-mens en mans-dier uit tot een belangrijk onderdeel van de metamorfose en daarmee tot een constante in Fabres gedachtengoed. Zo verwerkt hij vanaf de negentiger jaren veelvuldig schilden van kevers in zijn installaties. Ook onderzoek naar de betekenis van het lichaam is essentieel in het oeuvre van Jan Fabre: het lichaam is de ingang naar elke emotie, gedachte en hogere contemplatie. Als beeldend kunstenaar maakt Jan Fabre grote monumentale werken en als theaterkunstenaar is hij auteur van een groot oeuvre van theaterteksten. Driften, verlangens, schoonheid en sterfelijkheid zijn weerkerende thema’s, zowel op het podium als in zijn beeldend werk.
Het werk “Op zoek naar Utopia” is van brons, is maar liefst drie meter hoog, vijf meter breed en zeven meter lang en weegt ruim 5 ton. Het is met bladgoud belegd. Het is eigenlijk een zelfportret. Het is Jan Fabre zelf die is afgebeeld, schrijlings over een schildpad gezeten, alsof hij te paard rijdt. Jan Fabre geeft aan dat het kunstwerk de zoektocht naar Utopia uitbeeldt, iedereen is immers op zoek naar de ideale plaats. Het is een ode aan de verbeelding.
Dit werk kan bewonderd worden ter hoogte van het Fabreplein in Nieuwpoort.
