A Pair of Victorian Terraces – Fitzroy North

Facing onto the beautiful Edinburgh Gardens, these two terrace houses, who are mirror images of one another, stand on one of the best streets of Fitzroy North – Alfred Crescent.

Built in 1880, these terraces with elegant polychomatic brick banding and ornate cast iron fretwork are examples of Victorian Filigree architecture. Built at a time of prosperity for wealthy families they are substantial properties and are well built. The front doors feature their original stained glass lunettes which have lozenges of stained glass and hand painted bird and flower images. The matching panels to their side of the front door are also still intact. As was fashionable in architecture at the time, the houses are reached by a set of stairs leading to the raised front terrace. This would have given the front parlour windows a better view of the park across the road, without the interference of the passing traffic in Alfred Crescent. The terraces feature their original cast iron gates and palings.

This year the FFF+ Group have decided to have a weekly challenge called “Snap Happy”. A different theme chosen by a member of the group each week, and the image is to be posted on the Monday of the week.

This week the theme, “pair” was chosen by Beverley, BlueberryAsh.

This pair of terraces seemed to be the perfect choice for the theme.

Fitzroy North has a distinct character, noted for its prevalence of wide streets and avenues, intact Victorian and Edwardian era terraced housing and for the Edinburgh Gardens, a large inner-city park formerly home to the Fitzroy Football Club. Fitzroy North is adjacent to, and shares a postcode and neighbourhood character with Clifton Hill, both being government subdivisions set on elevated ground and to the same layout by Clement Hodgkinson in the 1870s, and distinct from the earlier narrow and more crowded private subdivisions in the lower lying areas of Fitzroy and Collingwood to the south. Most of Fitzroy North is single and double storey Victorian and Edwardian housing, comprising rows of terraces, with a mixture of semi-attached and freestanding houses on small to moderately sized blocks. Large parts of the suburb are protected by heritage controls. The suburb is relatively intact and consistent in character, having had far less industrial and commercial development in its formative years than its southern namesake.
