Paddington and Scout Welcome Lettuce 1.

            CABBAGE:  *Whimpers at back door.*

BOGART:  “Paddy!  Paddy, I think Cabbage needs to go outside.”

PADDY:  “I’m coming, little Cabbage.”

CABBSGE:  *Whimpers more.*

COUSIN PADDINGTON:  “Look, there is a picnic hamper outside the back door.”  *Opens the French doors and pulls picnic hamper inside.*

CABBAGE:  *Sniffs and whimpers excitedly about the picnic basket, wagging tail.*

PADDY:  “A picnic hamper, Cousin Paddington?  I wasn’t aware that we were going on a picnic.  Were you Scout?”

SCOUT:  “No Paddy.”  *Shakes head vehemently.*  “It’s been raining today anyway.  We wouldn’t go for a picnic on the wet lawn.”

CABBAGE:  “Woof, woof!  Woof!”  *Wags tail excitedly.*

BOGART:  “It seems that Cabbage didn’t want to go out, Paddy.”

COUSIN PADDINGTON:  “Evidently not Bogart.  He wanted us to find the hamper.”

Muffled whimpers come from inside the picnic hamper.

SCOUT:  “Paddy?  Paddy!”  *Clutches Dolly tightly to his chest.*

PADDY:  “Yes Scout?”

SCOUT:  “Paddy, do picnic hampers often make whimpering noises?”  *Points shaking paw to the hamper.*

PADDY:  “Not generally, Scout.”

CABBAGE:  “Woof!  Woof, woof!”  *Whimpers and wags tail.*

BOGART:  “Well this one does!”

COUSIN PADDINGTON:  “Perhaps we should open the hamper and find out what is making the whimpering noise inside.”

SCOUT:  “Oh no Cousin Paddington!”  *Puts paw to mouth in concern.*  “What if it is a Big Bad Wolf like in Little Red Riding Hood, come to gobble us all up?”

PADDY:  “Nonsense Scout!  There are no Big Bad Wolves here!”  *Opens picnic hamper.*

The picnic hamper was a Christmas gift from my mother to Paddy and Scout.  The set for two comes with a teapot, sugar bowl, milk jug, two cups, saucers and plates, a picnic rug and cutlery.  Each piece of china is gilded, and the teapot and plates have Mrs. Rabbit, Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail from Beatrix Potter’s “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” painted on them.  The set came in its own woven reed picnic basket lined with gingham fabric to match the picnic rug.  The set is made by Reutter Porzellan Germany, a company that has been producing children’s tableware, souvenirs, and porcelain miniatures of high quality for over seventy years.  I have several prized pieces of their china in my 1:12 miniature collection.  

My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago).  He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes.  The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt.  He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.  

He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years.  He is a very precious member of my small family.

Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend.  He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa.  His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House.  He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences.  Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.

Cousin Paddington is a recent visitor to our family.  Travelling all the way from London, he was caught in transit thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic, so it looks like he is stopping with us for a while.  The more I look into his happy, smiling face, the more attached I am becoming to him.

Bogart has only arrived in the last few months.  He has travelled all the way from Georgia, via Alabama as a gift to me from a friend.  I look forward to getting to know his character, but I can already say that he has lovely Southern manners and seems to be a fun and gentle soul with an inquisitive nature.

Cabbage is Paddy's Pug Dog.  He was a gift to Paddy from a friend who also likes Pugs.  He is fiercely loyal to Paddy, Scout, Cousin Paddington and Bogart, but seldom stays around long enough to have his picture taken, as there are always new adventures to sniff out.

Lettuce, as you can see is a very recent arrival.  She was a present from my two goddaughters to me to keep Cabbage company.  My eldest Goddaughter, Polly, wisely suggested the name Lettuce since we already have Cabbage.  I’m looking forward to getting to know her better.  She is very soft and sweet natured, and I suspect she will follow her older brother Cabbage and help sniff out adventures.
