Paddington , Scout and the Cherry Blossoms

            SCOUT:  “Paddy!  Paddy?”

PADDY:  “Yes Scout?”  *Looks about.*  “Scout?  Scout, where are you?”

SCOUT:  “I’m up this tree.  Look up, Paddy!”

PADDY:  *Looks up and sees Scout waving from a cherry blossom tree branch.*  “Scout!  What are you doing way up there?  Be careful!”

SCOUT:  “I need your help, Paddy.”

PADDY:  “To get down from the tree, Scout?”

SCOUT:  “No!”  *Shakes head.* “We have Daddy for that!  Now come up here please, Paddy.”

PADDY:  *Climbs up tree and joins Scout.*  “Now, what can I help you with, Scout?”

SCOUT:  “Paddy, isn’t it still winter time?”

PADDY:  “Well, it might feel like it Scout, but no it isn’t.  It is finally spring time here, Scout.  Why do you ask?”

SCOUT:  “Oh!  Then that explains why are there spring blossoms on the trees!  These are spring blossoms, aren’t they Paddy?”

PADDY:  “Hhhmmm…”  *Looks at blossoms closely.*  “Yes they are Scout.  They are cherry blossoms.”

SCOUT:  “They are sooooo pretty!  They are pink.  Pink is my favourite colour, you know Paddy.”

PADDY:  “Yes, I knew that Scout.”

SCOUT:  “Oh!”  *Wonders how Paddy knows this.*  “Aren’t the trees smart, Paddy?”

PADDY:  “Well yes they are, Scout, but what in particular makes you say that?”

SCOUT:  “Well, it’s still so cold that I feel like it is winter time here, and yet the trees know it is spring, so they are putting out flowers to let Mother Nature know to warm things up and bring us some sunny, warm days!”

PADDY:  “Yes they are, Scout.  The trees sense that spring is nearly here, Scout.”

SCOUT:  “Oh I hope it comes soon, Paddy!  Winter time is fun, but I am a bit tired of the cold now.”

PADDY:  “Me too, Scout!”

SCOUT:  “Do you know what else I hope for, Paddy?”

PADDY:  “Some help out of this tree, Scout?”

SCOUT:  *Nods entusiatically.*

PADDY and SCOUT:  “Help!  Daddy help save us!  Daddy, please help get us down from this tree!”

My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago).  He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes.  The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt.  He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.  

He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years.  He is a very precious member of my small family.

Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend.  He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa.  His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House.  He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences.  Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.

Even though the skies may be blue and the spring blossom is out, thanks to a La Niña weather event, it is cold and very winter like here, so both Paddy and Scout are wearing hand knitted scarves and Paddy is wearing  hand knitted hat by Lorna's Lovely Looks.  Paddy sports a crown pin and Scout insisted on wearing a pink tea cup one, which seems most appropriate.  Both were gifts from a good friend who is very fond of Paddy and Scout.
