A Patriotic Cup of Jubilee Tea - a photo on Flickriver

            My Grandmother always said that a cup of tea drunk from a thick pottery cup or mug was like a slap in the face from the host or hostess.  Interestingly, it is something that has stuck with me all my life, and I neither drink, nor serve tea from a thick pottery mug or cup.  It is also said by the British, including myself, that a cup of tea will help make a bad situation better.  The British have also made an art out of taking tea with elevenses, like Paddington Bear does with antique dealer Mr. Gruber, or at afternoon tea with cakes or scones. 

The theme for “Looking Close on Friday” for the 18th of November is “mug handle”.  Luckily Maria said that a teacup handle would also suffice.  Considering how quintessentially British it is to drink tea, I have chosen a very patriotic teacup handle from my royalty ware collection.  This teacup was made by the British pottery manufacturer Aynsley in 1935 to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary.  At the time, the Commonwealth was still the British Empire, on which the sun never sunk, and London was the Empire’s capital, so as well as bearing portraits of the monarchs, it is decorated with London landmarks and flags from many countries, including India, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa.  Yet the Union Jack has been reserved for the handle.  It is perhaps one of the more whimsical tea cup handles in any of my collections.  I do hope you like my choice for the theme, and that it makes you smile.

Aynsley China Ltd. was a British manufacturer of bone china tableware, giftware and commemorative items.  The company was founded in 1775 by John Aynsley in Lane End, Longton, Staffordshire. In 1861 his grandson John Aynsley built the historic Portland Works on Sutherland Road, Longton, Staffordshire. The company's profitability made it a desirable acquisition. In June 1970 Spode put in a bid, this was then topped in July by Denbyware. Discussions then followed with Waterford Glass and a one million pound bid was agreed. In 1970 John Aynsley and Sons was taken over by Waterford and renamed Aynsley China Ltd. In 1987 Waterford sold the company in order to focus the group's fine china sales on the worldwide Wedgwood brand. In May 1997, Aynsley China was acquired by The Belleek Pottery Group in Ireland. The company closed its Stoke-on-Trent factory in September 2014. The company was a favoured supplier of the British royal family. Both Queen Elizabeth II and Diana, Princess of Wales, chose Aynsley china as wedding presents from the British china industry.
