Puente sobre el río Esla - a photo on Flickriver

            La ciudad de Valencia de Don Juan se encuentra en un cerro junto al río Esla, a una altura de 765 msnm (la ribera del Esla se encuentra a 746 msmn). Se sitúa en la ribera del río Esla, dentro de la comarca de la Vega del Esla, en la zona sur de la provincia de León.

Su término municipal limita al norte con Fresno de la Vega, al este con Villabraz y Pajares de los Oteros, al sur con Villaornate y al oeste con Villamañán, San Millán de los Caballeros, Villademor de la Vega y Toral de los Guzmanes.

Con la salvedad del cerro junto al río Esla sobre el que se asienta la ciudad, el municipio se caracteriza por lo suave de su relieve. A una altitud de 765 msnm (la ribera del Esla se encuentra a 746 msmn), el municipio no cuenta con elementos orográficos destacables más allá del cerro, cuya pendiente sobre el río se encuentra plagada de una serie de cárcavas. En el término municipal se encuentran los vértices geodésicos de la Parva, a una altitud de 934 msnm, de Reina a una altitud de 900 metros, de La Carrera y de Trasderrey, a 867 metros.

El río que discurre por la localidad es el Esla, el antiguo Astura siendo este el principal río de la Provincia de León y de los afluentes del Duero.

Desde épocas remota del Esla se extrajeron cauces artificiales para regar las vegas y mover molinos harineros. Entre ellos destacan:

- Cauce de los Molinos de Valencia de Don Juan (siglo XV)

- Presa de San Marcos (siglo XVI)

- Canal del Esla (siglo XIX)

El clima de Valencia de Don Juan, es un clima de tipo Mediterráneo-Continentalizado con veranos suaves e inviernos muy fríos con varios días al año de heladas, pudiendo haber algún día al año con nevadas aunque estas no son muy frecuentes.

The city of Valencia de Don Juan is on a hill next to the river Esla, at a height of 765 meters (the bank of Esla is 746 masl). It is situated on the banks of the river Esla within the region of La Vega del Esla, in the southern province of Leon.

The municipality borders to the north Fresno de la Vega, to the east and Pajares Villabraz the Oteros, to the south and west Villaornate Villamañán, San Millán de los Caballeros de la Vega and Villademor Toral of Guzman.

With the exception of the river Esla hill on which sits the city, the municipality is characterized by mild relief. At an altitude of 765 meters (the bank of Esla is 746 masl), the municipality has no outstanding terrain elements beyond the hill, whose slope above the river is plagued by a series of gullies. In the township are the vertices of the geodesic Parva, at an altitude of 934 meters, of Queen at an altitude of 900 meters of the race and Trasderrey, to 867 meters.

The river that runs through the town is Esla Astura former being the main river of the province of Leon and the tributaries of the Duero.

From remote times were extracted Esla artificial channel to irrigate the plains and move flour mills. Among them:

- Cauce de los Molinos de Valencia de Don Juan (XV century)

- Dam San Marcos (XVI century)

- Esla Channel (siglo XIX)

The climate of Valencia de Don Juan, is a Mediterranean-type climate with a continental mild summers and very cold winters with more frost days per year, may be some snow days a year but these are not very common.
