Melanargia lachesis (Medioluto ibérica)

                En esta imagen puede apreciarse el dimorfismo sexual, bien definido en el reverso de las alas de Melanargia lachesis. El macho con color de fondo blanco, queda a la izquierda (abajo) y la hembra, con tonos sepia, ocráceos, a la derecha (arriba). 
Esta especie aparece sólo en el sur de Europa, siendo muy común en toda la Península Ibérica, excepto en el litoral Cantábrico y en los Pirineos. Prefiere las zonas de matorral cercanas a cursos de agua o zonas húmedas, llegando a los 1500 metros de altitud. A veces alcanza grandes concentraciones. 
Las alas pueden alcanzar una envergadura de seis centímetros, aunque su tamaño es muy variable. En general, la cara superior de las alas es blancuzca con bandas negras en las zonas marginales y en el centro de las anteriores. Las alas posteriores presentan un par de ocelos negros y blancos. Por la cara inferior, el color negro es más pálido; las anteriores tienen un ocelo desdibujado cerca del ápice, mientras que las posteriores presentan un grupo de tres en la parte posterior, y otros dos cerca del borde anterior. 
Las mariposas  vuelan durante el verano, pudiendo tener dos generaciones.
