Into the Light - a photo on Flickriver

Into the Light

            Drove Rainbow Canyon (LIncoln County, Nevada) and very soon saw this train. The paved part of the drive is about 25 miles and there are three tunnels in the railroad that parallels the road. I tried to set up on the train as it approached the second tunnel but the result was not good. Raced the train down the canyon and got to the third tunnel in time to get this shot with very little waiting. The train horn was going  loud and long when it ran out of the tunnel.

Rainbow canyon has a lot to offer photographers. Two state parks, beautiful scenery, several ranches, trains and tunnels. The railroad has had a rough time keeping this open as can be seen by the two dates on the tunnel - first completed in 1911 and rebuilt in 1925 after most of the track through the canyon was wiped out by flooding. Major damage has occurred several other times since then with the track sometimes closed for many months to rebuild.
