Windswept - a photo on Flickriver

Windswept

These trees are beautifully windswept. This is of course because they are subject to strong winds in one direction.

In this case, I am a bit surprised because these trees are only ca. 760m above sea level and nowhere near the things that usually produce strong prevailing winds--the sea, a big lake or high mountains. This overlook is just the not-very-high but highest and point of a raised plateau.

This windy overlook (die Scharten) is on the edge of the Gempen Plateau.* Centuries ago, it was a strategic lookout point. It sits on the border between two Swiss Cantons, Solthurn and what is now the half-canton of Basel-Landschaft.

Before becoming part of Switzerland, Solothurn and Basel were essentially expanded city-states. The view shown is in the direction of Basel. The Solothurners needed to keep their eye on the Baslers!

During WW2, Scharten and the Gempen Plateau were again used strategically. They became a high-ground, near-border military lookout point and armed fortification. This was because of a feared invasion of Switzerland by Germany (that never happened).
