Central Medical Services Mercedes-Benz Econic (Y665 HUG)

I've been going to the British Grand Prix for over 25 years and in that time all off-track medical cover has been provided by either St. John Ambulance or the British Red Cross.

This year, however, a new operator was in evidence, Nottingham-based Central Medical Services.

One interesting vehicle they brought to the event was this Mercedes-Benz Econic Mobile Medical Unit / Communications Unit.

This particular one is enjoying something of a second life. It used to belong to South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and was used as a Command Support Unit (See below).

Although it has had a makeover there are still a few telltale signs of its former ownership, not least of which is that red and white canopy and the satellite dish on top.

Normally you can see no end of ambulances and first aid posts dotted around the circuit perimeter but not this year. I'm sure there were more than I saw but certainly not on the scale of previous years.

The British Grand Prix was held as a part of the UK Government's Events Research Programme, which meant a capacity crowd at a sporting event in the UK for the first time since early 2020 and no social distancing or face coverings required at the meeting. 

Taking place on the day before pretty much all lockdown restrictions were lifted in England all attendees had to demonstrate that they had tested negative for Covid-19 from tests taken within 48 hours of the event or prove that they had had both vaccination jabs 14 days before arrival.

I can't tell you how good it felt to experience some sort of 'normality' after so long. The scorching summer weather made it even better!
