Pack horse bridge, Wycoller, Lancashire

            Getting to know some of the characteristics of pack horse bridges before I make a start on a commission. Many of them were built with very low sides, sometimes with no walls at all, so as not to get in the way of the goods panniers on the horses. The bridge at Wycoller is a well known example and shows the type of wear the flag stones suffered from the passage of numerous heavily laden animals. It might come in handy when I have to draw the bridge at Higherford.
