            William the Conqueror built this mighty stone tower at the center of his London fortress in 1067.  It's main purpose has always been a royal residence.  However, it's been many other things as well, including an armory, a prison, a mint, an observatory, and, believe it or not, a zoo. But most famously it's been a place of torture and executions.  Quite a few famous historical figures have lost their heads at the Tower, including Anne Boleyn, Guy Fawkes, and, of course, William Wallace.  

Look closely and you will see the words "ENTRY TO THE TRAITORS' GATE."  The name Traitors' Gate has been used since before 1543.  Prisoners were brought by barge along the Thames, passing under London Bridge, where the heads of recently executed prisoners were displayed on pikes. Notable prisoners such as Sir Thomas More entered the Tower by Traitors' Gate.
