Two rural women walk beside a railroad track after a train has passed. They are gathering "clinkers" -- pieces of coal that have been thrown from the train, to use in their own homes. 

The moonlit, starry sky of early morning and the monumental figures set against the tracks that recede into the far distance create and almost mystical mood. Some see elements of Magic Realism in this work, a mid-20th-century movement defined by dream-like imagery. In Magic Realism, everyday reality is recast in a manner that borders on the supernatural. 

Carter was born and raised in Portsmouth OH, and his strong attachment to the area is evident in much of his work.
