Ruisdael almost always includes a dead tree of some sort, in his paintings.

He expanded on a distinctly Dutch approach to landscape in the mid 1600's. Rather than using land to set stories from myth, religion, or peasant life, Ruisdael presented the fertile, unbounded countryside as the primary subject. These paintings articulated national pride at the end of a long war for independence from Spain. While the Dutch earned much of their considerable wealth from sea trade, the land--largely reclaimed from the sea, also offered an important source for prosperity. The Netherlands was in fact the only European country at the time that could feed its population without depending on imports.

Almost every painting by this artist I like. In fact I can't think of a painting by him I don't like.
