Borage >< wilder Borretsch - a photo on Flickriver

            Borage is an annual plant of the broadleaf family. Its leaves have bristly hairs and resemble the related comfrey. It is quite insensitive to cold and also grows on rubble. It attracts bees and likes a lot of light and loose soil. This is why borage, which originates from southern Europe, has often gone wild. The plant, which flowers from May to September, initially has pink flowers that turn blue during flowering. This is because the pigment contained in the leaves acts like litmus as an indicator and turns red in an acidic environment, much like the closely related lungworts.

Der Borretsch ist eine einjährige Pflanze aus der Familie der Raublattgewächse. Seine Blätter sind borstig behaart und ähneln dem verwandten Beinwell. Er ist recht unempfindlich gegen Kälte und wächst auch auf Schutt. Er zieht Bienen an und mag viel Licht und lockere Böden. Daher ist der aus Südeuropa stammende Borretsch vielfach verwildert. Die von Mai bis September blühende Pflanze hat anfangs rosane Blüten, die sich während des Blühens blau färben. Denn der in den Blättern enthaltene Farbstoff wirkt wie Lackmus als Indikator und verfärbt sich in saurem Milieu rot, ganz ähnlich wie bei den nahe verwandten Lungenkräutern.
