Solanum lycopersicoides fruit - a photo on Flickriver

            An under-utilized tomato relative with black fruit and potential cold resistance, as well as reistance to insects and multiple diseases.

Cross pollination is required to set fruit.  I tried crossing this with several other species with zero success so far.  In fact, the fruit that you see in these pictures are likely the result of crossing S. lycopersicoides with S. chilense, but there's no knowing if any seeds will develop.  I've had great success getting fruit to form with multiple lycopersicoides crosses, but when you open them up, no seeds.

Another challenge is getting this species to flower: a lot of the flowers abort for some reason before they even have a chance to develop and open!  They reportedly take 6 months to mature.  Let's not talk about how difficult it was to germinate the seeds in the first place!  Only 2 out of 20 sprouted, and this is with extensive treatment.
