Visse tra il V e il VI secolo, fu vergine consacrata e autrice di miracoli, e dopo la sua morte oggetto di una venerazione incessante che portò anche alla fine del mal des ardents, l’epidemia che falcidiò 14 mila parigini nel XIV secolo: Genoveffa, Genevieve in francese, è la santa di Parigi, colei che convinse i parigini a restare nonostante la minaccia degli Unni, l’esempio su cui appoggiarsi.
La chiesa di Saint-Etienne-du-Mont è situata nel quartiere latino, sul colle di santa Genoveffa, che prende il nome dalla santa che ivi morì e trovò sepoltura nel VI secolo; nelle vicinanze della chiesa vi sono il Panthéon, la biblioteca Sainte-Geneviève e il lycée Henri-I
L'organo a canne principale della chiesa, collocato sulla cantoria in controfacciata, fu costruito tra il 1633 e il 1636 da Pierre Pescheur ed è uno dei più antichi ed importanti strumenti della città.
