The geographical position of the Volga has long been (since the 8th century) determined its role in trade contacts between East and West. From Central Asia, fabrics, metals were exported, from the Slavic lands - furs, wax, honey. By the 9th – 10th centuries Many Volga cities acquired important economic importance.
Volga originates on the Valdai Upland (Tver region); flows into the Caspian Sea. The length of the river is 3,530 km, the basin area is 1,361 million km2. By the area of the basin, the Volga ranks 1st in Europe and 5th in Russia.
About 70 species of fish live in the Volga, including 40 commercial fish (roach, herring, bream, pike perch, common carp, catfish, pike, sturgeon, sterlet, etc.).
