san francisco's "painted ladies"....(HSS)

            This popular row of brightly painted vintage houses have been featured in a variety of tv shows and movies.These houses were survivors of the 1906 earthquake, and during the war years were painted gray with Army surplus paint. Later a movement began to brighten these modest Victorian style homes. To paint these houses these bright colors was against the Victorian style, but more a 20th century style choice. Other large cities now have their "painted ladies" areas....
